Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, had conducted a great yagna sacrifice and distributed food to the poor.

A mongoose happened to witness the event and mentioned in disdain that this was all just a great show and proceeded to share a story with all those present.

In a small village, not very far from the place, there lived a poor man with his family. The family was visited by a traveller who, fatigued from his long journey, asked for some food.

The family though poor with limited rations, shared their food with him. First the head of the family, followed by the three remaining members kept offering their share of the meal to the traveller, as he kept mentioning that he was still hungry.

When the traveller ate the last morsel of food, he transformed into the god of dharma, Yamraj himself! He blessed the family and granted them moksha.

The mongoose had then rolled one side of his body over the few scraps of the leftovers, and it had turned golden.

Since then, it had been trying to find another such great sacrifice which would turn his other side golden too. No other sacrifice had managed to do that, including Yudhishthira's sacrifice as well.
