Story of Gajendra Moksha | How an elephant attained Moksha by meditating upon Vishnu

Updated: Dec 9, 2022

I'm the forest of Trikuta, there lived an elephant king called Gajaendra. Once while he was bathing in the lake, a crocodile caught hold of his leg, and try as he might wouldn't let Gajendra go! All the rest of the elephants came to his rescue, but even they were no match for the crocodile. After a long struggle, Gajendra had almost given up when he raised a lotus to surrender to Vishnu for his help.

Vishnu sent his Sudarshan Chakra (divine discus) flying which decapitated the crocodile's head, thereby releasing him (who was a Gandharva i.e. celestial singer in his previous birth). He also explained the reason behind Gajendra's long suffering - he was a famous king in his previous birth & cursed by a sage for his ego. So, when Gajendra finally surrendered to Vishnu keeping his ego aside, he attained Moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth).
