Saints of India: Janabai

Sant Janabai was one of the saints of the bhakti movement, living in the 13th century, and who worked as a maid in the house of none other than the famous Sant Namdev himself!

Let us know a little more about her...

Sant Janabai was one of the saints of the bhakti movement, living in the 13th century.

She was born into a poor family and so had to work as a maid, in the house of none other than Damasheti, father of the famous Sant Namdev!

Janabai was also a huge Vitthala devotee and always chanted his name while doing the most mundane of everyday activities.

Her devotion to Vitthala was so much that many a times, she used to even forget to do her work, as she used to be completely engrossed in taking the god's name. It is believed that, at such times Vitthala himself used to come down to the earth and complete the work for his devotee!

During one such incident, Vitthala had come down to help Janabai with grinding some corn.

But he forgot to take his ornaments and shawl back, which he had removed while working on the grinding, while returning.

And so the next day, Janabai was accused of stealing the god's ornaments!

A punishment was finalized and she was to be impaled on a spear, but when the time came to do so, the spear turned into water, thereby proving her innocence to all!
