Pradyumna, the son of Krishna, played an important role in many of Krishna's battles, including the Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata. He was a vital member of the Yadava dynasty and a source of great pride for Krishna and his family. Let us read on to the know the story behind Pradyumna's birth...

Krishna’s son Pradyumna was born in Dwaraka to Rukmini, who Krishna had eloped with from Vidarbha upon her request during her swayamvara.

Pradyumna was actually the reincarnation of Kamadeva, the god of love and consort of Rati devi. He had previously been burnt to ashes by the fury of Shiva for trying to interrupt his meditation.

Pradyumna's birth was followed by his abduction by the asura Shambara within 10 days. This was due to a prophecy which mentioned him to be the cause o the asura’s death.

In an attempt to kill the child, Shambara threw him into the ocean, where he was swallowed by a mighty fish. The fish was later caught by fishermen and presented to Shambara, whose cooks discovered a child upon cutting it open in the kitchen.

The child was then given to Mayavati, the earthly incarnation of Rati. At that time, Narad muni appeared in front of her and told her all about her previous birth and also the true identity of the child.

Thus, Mayavati who recognized him as her divine consort and raised him until he flowered into adolescence.

When the child grew up, Mayavati expressed her amorous feelings towards him, she explained to him the circumstances of his birth and bestowed upon him the mystic art of mahamaya.

Pradyumna used this art to summon the asura to battle, where he defeated him using hundreds of weapons belonging to celestial beings.

Later, accompanied by his wife, Pradyumna descended upon the palace in Dwaraka, where the crowds mistook his handsome countenance and bluish-black curling locks for Krishna himself.

However, Rukmini recognized him as her own son, and Krishna manifested himself to the scene along with Vasudeva and Devaki.

Together with the residents of Dvaraka, they embraced the couple and rejoiced.
