There once was a gigantic mountain called Vindhya, who was extremely proud of his strength.
One day, the messenger of the gods, Narada was passing by, when he stopped to speak with Vindhya.
Knowing about his boastful and arrogant nature, Narada thought of showing him the mirror. And so he mentioned Mt. Sumeru to be the best and the greatest.
This hurt Vindhya greatly and he was greatly disappointed.
He went away to pray to Shiva by making a linga from clay. Pleased with his penance, Shiva appeared and blessed him.
A few sages, who were also present near them, requested Shiva to reside there forever.
And that is how the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple came into existence!
