Dashavatara - 02 - Kurma

Updated: Dec 9, 2022

Once upon a time, Indra and the devas lost all their wealth, strength and possessions. This was due to a curse put on them by sage Durvasa.

Eventually, the devas lost all their power and came to Vishnu for help. He asked them to seek the amrita, the nectar of immortality, which rested at the bottom of the ocean of milk. And they would have to churn the ocean to get it. The devas at once realised that they were too weak to undertake this mammoth task. They asked the asuras for help, promising them a share of the amrita.

And so the churning began. Mt. Mandara was used as the churning rod, while Vasuki, the serpent king was the churning rope. All seemed pretty set until they actually started churning! The mountain started to sink since its base could not reach the seafloor.

That is when Vishnu stepped in. He took the form of Kurma (tortoise), and supported the mountain by acting as its base to prevent it from sinking. The devas and asuras could then continue the ocean churning without any further issues.
